A leading US manufacturer of bulletproof vests has filed a lawsuit against one of its rivals alleging patent and trademark infringement.

Second Chance Body Armor Inc, based in Michigan, whose body armour is used by police and law enforcement officers, has begun legal proceedings against First Choice Armor & Equipment Inc, of Brockton, Massachusetts.

The suit, which has been filed in Virginia, charges First Choice with patent and trademark infringement. In particular, it cites First Choice's "Millennium Flex 2000" vests with violating Second Chance patents.

A spokesman for the Second Chance Group said legal action was necessary because First Choice had failed to heed a cease and desist warning issued by Second Chance several months ago.
