Shoe chain operator Brantano's turnover for the six-month period fell 6.6 per cent to €145.9 million compared to €156.3m a year ago, before the company had sold off its stores in the Netherlands and Denmark

Sales in Belgium and Luxemburg grew to €69.7m during the first half from €68.4m last year, while same-store sales there rose 0.7 per cent.

British sales increased 0.4 per cent to €76.2m from €75.9m, with same-store sales slipping 0.1 per cent.

Chief executive Joris Brantegem said in a statement: "A lack of general consumer confidence since April and bad weather conditions at the beginning of the second quarter are the reasons for the negative revenues."

Brantano, which operated a total of 269 outlets as of 30 June 2005, reiterated its full-year sales prediction of €302-€307m.
