Boutique fashion operator Brighton Collectibles has been awarded US$6.7m after a Californian court judged that retailer Coldwater Creek had violated its trade dress and copyright rights.

The US District Court jury in San Diego, California ruled there had been infringement of Brighton's Carolina Heart copyright and the company's distinctive trade dress, which the company calls the "Brighton Look".

Brighton said it has other cases pending with claims similar to those against Coldwater.

Meanwhile, Coldwater said it wanted to overturn the verdict through post-trial motions, and, if necessary, an appeal.
