Retailer Uniqlo's Japanese stores enjoyed a buoyant March, with monthly sales up nearly 14% on a year ago.

Same-store sales were also up 8.1% at the Fast Retailing-owned unit, while sales at direct-run stores increased by 13.7%.

Total sales for Japan, including direct sales, were up 13.8%.

"Existing store sales increased year on year in March thanks to a strong performance by our spring garments and a successful bottoms campaign," said the company.

Meanwhile, Uniqlo announced its return to the Chinese capital Beijing with the opening of its Beijing Xidan store on 29 March.
