Luxury goods maker, Burberry, has hired private investigators to find the source of thousands of items of fake clothing and accessories flooding the market.

A recent boom in the brand's popularity has seen a profusion of fakes featuring the signature check print hitting the Hong Kong market.

The Burberry check, used for a host of items from the company's famous trench coat to bags and accessories, is a registered trademark.

Lawyers acting for Burberry said items collected during a year-long campaign would be destroyed within two weeks.

Trademark infringement is a major problem for many luxury brands in Hong Kong.

Private investigators hired by Burberry to search markets, small shops and department stores have uncovered rolls of fake Burberry fabric.
