Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corp posted a 4.2% increase in second-quarter sales, although the firm said the pace of increases slowed late in the quarter due to the effect of unseasonably warm weather.

Net sales for the three months ended 2 December were US$985.1m, 4.2% ahead of the $945.4m registered during the prior-year period. Same-store sales accelerated 2.4%.

Same-store sales rose 5% in September and 1.3% in October but fell 8.8% "due to the unusually warmer weather during the month," the company said in a statement.

Burlington Coat was acquired by Bain Capital Partner LLC for $2.1bn last April.

During the first half of the year, sales were up 2.9% to $1.64bn versus $1.6bn during the first half of 2005.

At the end of the quarter, the company, based in Burlington, NJ, operated 373 off-price stores in 44 states. It expects to open another eight Burlington Coat Factory stores during the remainder of the fiscal year and convert three Cohoes stores to its principal nameplate.

Burlington Coat is scheduled to release its earnings on 17 January.
