C&A Foundation, the corporate foundation affiliated with global retailer C&A, has partnered with the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and BRAC University (BRACU) on a transparency initiative that will see digital mapping of the country's ready-made garment industry.

The company is funding the programme, which aims to collect "credible, comprehensive and accurate" data, and will be implemented by the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (CED) and BRAC University, and coordinated by BRAC USA. Further donors are expected to join.

The aim is to provide accurate, credible and updated RMG factory information to industry stakeholders in a manner that "enhances confidence in the ability of the sector to contribute to equitable development in Bangladesh".

A first of its kind, the programme will map RMG factories across all garment-producing districts in Bangladesh, providing a detailed database of factories, including subcontractors, on an interactive, digital map.

In addition to factory names and locations, the map will also feature information such as numbers of workers, product type, export country, certifications, and brand customers. The programme will be guided by a multi-stakeholder Project Advisory Committee, comprising of representatives of workers, NGOs, donors, employers, and industry associations, among others.

Representatives of the BGMEA and BRACU signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last week and agreed to disclose the information to the public.
