Headwear producer New Era Cap Co on Thursday said its application with the Fair Labor Association has been accepted in a move that will allow it to continue its business with FLA-affiliated colleges and universities.

The New York-based company, which employs more than 1,700 people at its plants, said its role as a Class B licensee with the FLA proves its "commitment to a healthy, safe and high quality working environment for all its employees".

President Christopher Koch added: "New Era is proud to be part of a growing movement by colleges and universities to ensure that the products sold on their campuses are manufactured in an environment that respects apparel workers, assures their health and promotes their safety."

In June, an 11-month strike at the firm's Derby plant in New York ended after the plant's 330 workers ratified a four-year contract on a wide range of issues including health and safety.
