Supermarket group Carrefour is to re-brand its 1000-strong Champion store network in France to the Carrefour and Carrefour Market banners over the next two years, and develop apparel lines as part of an expanded range of products sold there.

The re-branding will take place from September this year until mid-2010, and means the Champion brand will no longer be part of the French retail landscape.

The move follows similar projects in Spain, Argentina, Poland, Brazil and Turkey to shift the group to a multi-format single-brand strategy.

The conversions follow trials at 13 stores which, the world's second-largest retailer said, led to higher sales and gains in local market share.

Key to there success will be an expanded range of own-brand products, as well as offering a wider range of non-food goods such as apparel.

The rebranding could add up to EUR200m to the group's annual operating profit from 2011 Carrefour believes.
