An Australian chemist claims he has come up with a new chemical process for clothes that stops the wearer being bitten by blood-sucking mosquitos.

Chris Harvey, of Melbourne, says he has developed a chemical process that can be sprayed on garments to provide the wearer with protection from the winged pest for "up to 50 washes".

Mr Harvey said the process uses a biodegradable synthetic pyrethroid base to kill the insects and that the chemical has no detectable smell. He added that independent tests showed most mosquitoes died before even touching the material.
