Kids' clothing retailer The Children's Place Retail Stores Inc has posted a 25 per cent jump in first quarter net sales to $225.8 million, up from $181m in the same period a year ago.

The New Jersey-based company, which operates 700 stores across North America, also reported a comparable store sales boost of 16 per cent for the quarter.

Net income, meanwhile, more than doubled to $11.5m for the three-month period, up from $5.5m in the previous first quarter.

"Our strong performance was consistent across all key areas, including increases in full-price selling, customer traffic, conversion and inventory turn," CEO Ezra Dabah said of the results.

"We are encouraged by our continued momentum and excited about our future growth, which we will drive through increased store productivity and store expansion."

During the quarter, The Children's place opened 10 new retail outlets and closed one.
