France's President Jacques Chirac says he hopes that the ongoing feud over Chinese textile exports will be settled using World Trade Organisation legislation.

Chirac assured Chinese President Hu Jintao during trade talks that, although the growing flow of textiles out of China since global quotas poses a severe danger to France, he wants a solution to be found that follows the rules of the WTO .

The EU's executive commission the EC has kickstarted probes into imports of nine Chinese exports following pressure from a number of European nations, including France.

If the EC decides that the surge in imports is seriously disrupting the market, it may introduce safeguard quotas on Chinese textiles and garment goods.
