Women's fashion chain Christopher & Banks Corp on Wednesday said it expects to post higher-than-expected second quarter earnings after its same-store sales rose five per cent last month.

The Minneapolis-based retailer said total August sales surged 25 per cent to $23.4 million from $18.8m in the year-ago period thanks to solid sales of sweaters, woven shirts and bottoms.

It added total sales in the 13 weeks to August 13 soared 28 per cent to $73.9 million from $57.8m with same-store sales up six per cent.

The chain said strong sales and improved margins mean it now expects to earn 25-26 cents a share for the quarter when it releases its results later this month.
