The opening of Clariant's mainland China HQ in Shanghai

Chemicals specialist Clariant has increased its presence in mainland China with the opening today (20 October) of its new local headquarters in Shanghai.

The opening of the facility, which also includes a new technical application centre for pigments, coincided with the Swiss company’s announcement of a new Quinacridon pigment joint venture in Hangzhou.

Last September, Clariant opened a multi-purpose plant in Zhenjiang, while a new ethoxylation facility in Dayabay, Southern China, is under construction and due to open in mid-2011.

Clariant said that by then, it would have invested about CHF150m (US$156m) in China in two and a half years.

The company added that Greater China would account for 8% of its total business in 2010, employing up to 1,300 people, with representation in 13 cities and a total of 21 locations.

“Setting up the new Greater China headquarters and the new production site in Hangzhou reflects Clariant’s confidence in the stability and growth of the Chinese economy,” said Dr Hariolf Kottmann, Clariant CEO.
