The number of Norwegians who buy clothes and footwear from the comfort of their own homes via the internet has soared "significantly" over the past five years, a survey has revealed.

Nearly 480,000 Norwegians bought goods over the internet in August 2001, compared to just 64,000 in August 1996, with sales of clothes sales making up 14 per cent of all internet sales.

The number of people who have purchased via the web once or more, stands at 1.3 million, while one in five uses the net to get information before they decide to purchase, figures from Norwegian research group Norsk Gallu revealed today.
