Leading marketer of luxury leather goods Coach Inc on Wednesday said it had appointed a former executive of apparel giant Gap Inc as president of its North American retail division.

The New York-based firm said in a press release that Mike Tucci, who had been executive vice president at Gap Direct, would take up his new role next month when he replaces Dave DeMattei who is leaving to pursue other opportunities.

Coach said he will be responsible for all its retail and factory store strategy and operations including merchandising, planning, and real estate activities in the US and Canada, and will report directly to chairman and CEO Lew Frankfort.

"We are extremely pleased that Mike will be joining our management team as an executive officer, bringing his substantial merchandising and retail experience to Coach," Mr Frankfort said.

"Growing our US retail business is a key component of significantly increasing Coach's market share here in the US, where we will be building our retail store base, relocating and expanding key locations and driving productivity through fashion innovation, marketing initiatives and in-store merchandising activities."
