Colder weather boosted sales of autumn/winter ranges in October

Casual clothing brand Uniqlo saw sales at its Japanese stores rise for a third consecutive month in October, as cold weather boosted sales of autumn/winter ranges.

Same store sales increased 5.5% year-on-year, while sales at its directly-run stores rose 4.5%. Total sales, including online sales, grew 5.9%. Uniqlo opened nine stores, but closed eight during the month.

Last month, Fast Retailing forecast profit growth below analyst expectations for its next fiscal year amid losses at its Uniqlo and J Brand US businesses last year. During the 12 months to the end of August, profit attributable to owners of the parent grew 47.6% to JPY110bn (US$902.4m), while revenue was up 21.6% to JPY1.68trn.

However, operating losses expanded at Uniqlo USA, due to the rapid expansion of the store network, as well as the brand still being comparatively new to the US market and not yet widely recognised.
