Apparel maker Cooneen Textiles has announced plans to scale down its workforce in Fivemiletown, County Tyrone, with the loss of 16 jobs.

The Fivemiletown plant, which manufactures bridal wear for retailer BHS, currently employs more than 90 people.

It has been operating a three-day week for the past month to allow for the development new products, which the company hopes will secure remaining jobs.

According to a spokesman for Cooneen, the move follows an increase in outsourcing to foreign companies.

"This is no reflection on the workforce in Fivemiletown who continue to adapt and change in order to try and maintain a viable production unit in these very difficult times," the spokesman said.

"We are confident that the remaining 75 workers in Fivemiletown will retain their jobs with the possibility of increasing these numbers later in the year when the new products begin to produce sales."
