Ram Gidoomal, new chairman of CottonConnect

Sustainable cotton consultancy CottonConnect has appointed Ram Gidoomal CBE to the newly created role of chairman as the group looks to expand its work connecting retailers and brands with cotton farmers.

Gidoomal, also chairman of Fairtrade pioneers Traidcraft and Traidcraft Exchange, takes up the role with immediate effect – and one of his main objectives will be to secure a 100% sustainable supply chain for cotton .

"Brands selling cotton clothes and homeware products are reliant on a supply chain which is facing severe climate change impacts and water shortages," the new chairman said. "It is in everyone's interest to work closely with organisations that can influence cotton farmers in conserving and making better use of resources.

"CottonConnect offers an opportunity to make that happen. We have access and trust of the farmers through our partners – and we can scale-up our impact more than ten times over with the right support. Failure to connect all parts of this supply chain will put the future of cotton at risk," he added.

Gidoomal's other current roles include chair of the office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education in England and Wales; South Asian Development Partnership; Allia and Future Business (Industrial and Provident Society) Ltd.
