Clothing retail group Danier Leather on Wednesday posted a wider first quarter net loss on weak summer same-store sales and costs related to the opening of 10 new stores.

The Toronto-based operator of 100 stores reported a net loss for the 13 weeks ended September 27 of C$4.1 million, or 59 Canadian cents a share, versus a loss of C$3.4m, or 49 cents, in the year-ago period.

Sales edged up to C$23.3m from C$22.7m last year but same-store sales fell seven per cent.

President and CEO, Jeffrey Wortsman, commented: "The first quarter is traditionally our slowest and with a large increase in store count, our quarterly loss was expected to grow."
