Paul Marchant, divisional trading director of department store Debenhams's men's wear, women's wear and children's wear, has quit the company to join fashion chain New Look as managing director of buying, merchandising and design.

Marchant's departure follows the resignations of two of Debenhams's design team, who left the company before Christmas to join rival BHS

His responsibilities at Debenhams will be taken on by Suzanne Harlow, divisional trading director of lingerie, accessories and cosmetics, and Adam Creasey, director of buying for men's wear.

New Look was one of the few UK retailers to see good sales throughout the Christmas trading period, with total domestic sales for the 14 weeks ended 1 January increasing 18.8 per cent, and same-store sales rising 11.6 per cent.
