Department store operator Debenhams is planning to grow its business into India, and is also considering expanding into the Chinese market.

Debenhams, which has refused to confirm suggestions it is preparing a bid to rival competitor House of Fraser's offer for the Beatties department store chain, is planning ten store openings on the Indian market.
The first of the stores, which will be opened jointly with Planet Sports, will be opened in Delhi's Ambi Mall in April 2006.

The company, which operates 17 stores abroad at present, is pushing global expansion and plans a total of six new overseas stores this year.

Debenhams operates 116 stores throughout Britain, with 44 new stores planned for the near future.
