US apparel and footwear group Deckers Brands has revealed it has officially joined the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world's largest voluntary corporate citizenship initiative.

Reflecting the growing importance of corporate responsibility, the company says it has informed UN secretary-general HE Ban Ki-moon, via letter, of the company's commitment to the Global Compact and its ten principles.

"Our support for the United Nations Global Compact is a formal commitment of Deckers Brands to conduct our business with the utmost respect for universal principles around human rights, labour standards, responsible environmental practices, and anti-corruption," says Dave Powers, Deckers Brands' president and chief executive officer. "We look forward to this partnership and hope to continue to show our global commitment to being a good corporate citizen."

With over 8,000 participating companies, the UNGC is the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative. Launched in 2000, it brings business together with UN agencies, labour, civil society and governments to advance universal principles in the areas of human rights, labour standards, the environment and anti-corruption.
