German shoe company, Deichmann Schuhe, has teamed up with British manufacturer Shoe Emporium to open at least 10 out of town retail sheds in the UK in 2001. The stores will be branded Deichmann, Retail Week reported.

Deichmann, Europe#;s biggest shoe retailer, bought a majority shareholding in the UK company in a cash deal. It had denied that it had any plans to come to the UK. The company, which was established 80 years ago, operates 1,700 stores across Germany, Switzerland, Austria and the US. It generates sales of more than DM3bn ($1.3bn) per year.

Last month it announced that it would launch a Hungarian subsidiary and push into central Europe.
