Industrial sewing thread and linings supplier, Donisthorpe and Company Limited, has joined forces with the International Careerwear Consulting group, ICC, to develop and launch the Sew-Right construction guide.

Produced on an interactive CD-ROM, Donisthorpe says that Sew-Right will be the world's first dedicated garment construction guide for the career and workwear industry. It will provide designers, buyers and specifiers with advice on the best fabrics to use for specific applications and give manufacturers all the key technical information required to 'sew' a high performance garment before it goes into full production. Sew-Right will be available from Donisthorpe and ICC from December 1.

The CD-ROM will also offer detailed technical data and advice on needle selection and use supplied by some of Europe's leading needle providers. Supplier details for each fabric, thread and needle will be supplied on Sew-Right and internet-based hyper-links to supplier sites will facilitate quick and easy access to products and support worldwide.

Sew-Right is the result of an 18-month project where Donisthorpe and ICC brought together many of the UK's largest corporate clothing fabric suppliers including Carrington Career and Workwear Limited, Heathcoat and Company Limited and Klopman International.

Sew-Right will profile over 90 of the industry's most popular fabric types detailing their most suitable applications, composition, construction, weight and width. Each fabric profile will be linked to a technical 'sewing' file, which in addition to generating a visual image of the fabric, will offer expert guidance on seam construction including stitches per inch and the best needle and thread type and size to use for that specific fabric. All fabrics included in
Sew-Right's directory have been independently tested inside Donisthorpe's laboratories to ensure the accuracy and consistency of information.

Kenny McMaster, sales director, Donisthorpe, said: "We have long recognised the significance of the career and workwear market and have committed considerable resource in developing product and support for this sector. We have brought together many of the biggest names in the industry to create a definitive guide on how to maintain correct sewing techniques. Designers, buyers, specifiers and manufacturers will be able to choose the correct fabric for a specific application and be confident that it will perform. Sew-Right will be a much welcome addition to our customer service portfolio."

Eric Hudson, founder of the ICC and former managing director of Angelica International Limited added: "Sew-Right has massive implications for manufacturers seeking to minimise costly returns caused by faulty seams and enforce the highest productivity and quality standards on merchandise produced in the UK and off-shore. This is an invaluable tool that will promote quality and consistency." He concluded: "Everyone who has been involved in this project recognises its potential value to the industry. In order to ensure its ongoing value we will be offering updates as determined by new fabric innovations."

The Sew-Right CD-ROM will detail 90 of the most popular fabric types used for an extensive range of end-uses including careerwear, industrial, medical, casual, promotional, farming, protective and reflective. It will run on any desktop or laptop computer running Windows 95, 98 and offers seamless and instant e-mail links to all listed suppliers. Its well-designed menus will allow users to quickly identify and access the information they require by industry, fabric or supplier. The CD-ROM will be available from Donisthorpe and ICC on request.
