US-based down and feather processor Downlite, which supplies responsibly sourced performance fills to the outdoor apparel market, is expanding its Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certified supply chain in Europe and Asia.

The RDS certification, developed by non-profit organisation Textile Exchange, evaluates and traces the down supply chain, ensuring companies that the down used in their products comes from ethically treated geese and ducks.

According to Chad Altbaier, vice president of sales and business development at Downlite, the move is being driven by demand from consumers for increased transparency from brands to ensure they are using environmentally-friendly materials and also following sustainable practices.

"Significant demand for our RDS-certified down in both the outdoor and home furnishings market provoked us to expand our RDS-certified supply chain in Europe and Asia," he explains.

"This increased supply will assure our partners that they will have the option of manufacturing products made with 100% RDS-certified down."

Earlier this year also became the first company certified to the Global Traceable Down Standard developed by NSF Sustainability, which addresses animal welfare and supply chain traceability from parent farm to factory.
