Leading Hungarian apparel manufacturer Duna Knitwear, which has made clothing for international brands including Nike, Gap and Levi Strauss, has gone into liquidation, it was reported on Thursday.

According to a report in the daily Vilaggazdasag newspaper, the company has been forced to call in the administrators after being hit by a slump in US orders and fierce competition from Asian rivals.

The paper said the firm employs around 1,4000 people but that the majority are now on forced leave.
