Dupont, the maker of Spandex, an elastic fibre under the Lycra trademark, is offering Thai garment manufacturers a helping hand.

Around 200 manufacturers, including 15 in Thailand, are to be signed up under the Recommended Garment Vendors project launched by DuPont last month.

The project helps garment manufacturers to find the right type of fabric for their clothes, keeps firms up-to-date with innovations in fibre and fabric production, and it also provides technical help and marketing support to companies taking part in the project.

Demand for elastic fibre fabrics now totalled around 150,000 tons last year and has expanded into the shoe and leather industries.

DuPont said it is keen for Thai manufacturers to join the project as they have excellent potential with exceptional sewing skills.

DuPont is planning to improve links between Thai clothes makers and local fabric mills, reducing production costs.

Recommended Garment Vendors is the second phase of the Lycra Assured project. This was launched a year ago to help branded manufacturers and retail buyers find fabrics blended with Lycra.
