Dutch retail group Vendex KBB is to launch its Hema and Claudia Strater chains in Germany reported Retail Week.

Analysts believe the move could be tricky for variety store chain Hema, which is considered to carry a distinctively Dutch offer. When Hema debuted in Belgium, it took eight years to make a profit.

The transition is expected to be easier for fashion chain Claudia Strater, as Vendex already operates two clothing fascias, M&S Mode and Hunkemoller, in Germany. Vendex recently sold three other fashion chains - Amici, Kien and Kreymborg - after disappointing performances.

In Holland, Vendex faces stiff competition from foreign rivals, such as H&M of Sweden and Spain's Zara.
