Footwear company Ecco has teamed up with hi-tech operator P2i to develop a "revolutionary" running shoe which makes use of complex nano-coating technology.

Launched at ISPO '09, the Ecco Biom uses ion-mask, an ultra-thin protective layer originally developed to protect troops from chemical warfare.

The layer, equivalent in thickness to one-thousandth of a human hair, coats each fibre using an ionised gas to give the shoe extremely high water-repellent properties.

However, Ecco also points out that the shoe retains breathability, allowing continued air circulation and keeping feet drier and blister-free.

The company adds that the coating protects the shoe from dirt and scuffing. Ecco Biom will be available from retailers from this month.
