A five-member delegation from the European Parliament has promised to speak with European Union trade commissioner Pascal Lamy to see if textile concessions similar to those granted to Pakistani exporters can be extended to India.

The delegation, which is on a two-day official visit to India, discussed the problems faced by textile exporters with Indian officials and business representatives.

Neena Gill, a member of the Party of European Socialists group in the European Parliament, told the Financial Express newspaper that the issue of textile concessions being given to Pakistan under the generalised system of preferences (GSP) seemed to be unfair to India and needed to be sorted out.

"I am in the group on trade and investment and will personally take up the matter with Mr Lamy," she said.
