James J Amann has ben appointed as executive vice president of strategic initiatives at Federated Department Stores Inc.

Amann has served as chairman and chief executive officer of the company's Financial, Administrative and Credit Services (FACS) and Federated Systems Group (FSG) divisions since 1996. Previously, he had been president and chief executive officer of FACS since 1989.

In his new capacity, Amann will lead the analysis and execution of several important strategic initiatives. These will include the establishment of priorities to enhance and install new merchandise systems throughout the company; co-ordinating the credit privacy project across all internal disciplines; spearheading a comprehensive review of the company's capital and expense investment in technology; a high-level review of the company's past and future loyalty plans; and co-ordinating business and systemic efforts to become a more customer-centric company.

Effective September 1, Larry Lewark, president and chief operating officer of FSG, also will become chief information officer of the company, reporting to Tom Cole. Cole, who has served as chairman and chief executive officer of the company's Federated Logistics & Operations division since 1995, then will serve as the company's senior operating executive responsible for logistics, operations, store planning, construction and data processing.
