Portugal's footwear industry has continued its impressive record of sustained growth over the past 25 years with a sharp rise in export growth.

Statistics released by Trade Association APIC revealed a 16 per cent a rise in export growth in the first half of 2001 of 16 per cent at ESC153 billion.

In all, 46 million pairs of shoes were exported, a rise of 6.4 per cent on the same period last year. Of those shoes, 91 per cent were exported to EU countries, reaching ESC20 billion, up 16.8 per cent, while exports to Germany rose by 32.2 per cent.

In 1999, the footwear industry was the second largest in Portugal and between 1976 and 1996, it was the most profitable processing industry in the country.
