Several thousand fake Nike clothing and footwear items are being destroyed in Serbia after customs discovered a counterfeit unit in the country, local media reports.

It reportedly follows the discovery of a counterfeit production plant in Belgrade by the country's Ministry of Trade and Services.

According to a report by Mondaq news agency, 1,704 textile products from the seizure were taken to landfill last month, with 3,910 pairs of counterfeit shoes also set to be disposed. In total, 6,500 pairs of sneakers were found in the raid, together with hundreds of thousands of fake Nike labels.

Nike distributor Delta Sport and intellectual property firm PETO`EVIC overlooked the destruction of the fake goods, Mondaq reported.

Spokespeople for the organisations were not available to comment this afternoon (23 November).
