Teenage fashion retailer Aeropostale was celebrating today after its shares surged more than 50 per cent on their New York Stock Exchange debut.

The company's stock soared 54.2 per cent to $27.75 on Thursday as it enjoyed one of the most successful first day performances for an initial public offering in 2002.

The shares had originally been floated at $18 in a move that raised $225 million, with proceeds used to open up to 80 new stores.

Based in New York, Aeropostale operates around 280 stores across the US and had net sales of $304.8m in 2001.
