A documentary series that aligns with the United Nation’s (UN) Sustainable Development Agenda and focuses on the reverse journey of sustainable garments is to be shown for the first time at the UN to an audience of global members of state and fashion industry leaders.

Created by Fashion4Change, a content creation agency focused on delivering film, photography and thought-leadership events for sustainably driven brands, and directed and produced by duo Charney Magri and Ramzi Moutran, the series aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Agenda. It focuses on the reverse journey of sustainable garments from the finished piece on the catwalk to its original design.

Footage includes fashion production factories in Austria and India, which only use recycled, natural and next gen solution materials – among them the Geetanjali Woollen mill in Mumbai, responsible for saving on average 10.5m tonnes of textiles from landfill per year.

The films further feature a number of interviews with high profile industry insiders including the British Fashion Council’s CEO, Caroline Rush CBE, and the founder of the Ellen MacArthur foundation, Dame Ellen MacArthur.

“It is such an honour to have Catwalk to Creation shown at the UN headquarters in New York,” says co-director, Ramzi Moutran. “Charney and I wanted to help to lead the conversation on sustainable fashion, so that it’s at the forefront, common practice within the industry, rather than just a buzzword. The factories featured are forerunners for sustainable fashion and great examples of best practice.

“Presenting our documentary to some of the most influential people in the world is such a privilege and will bring much needed action. These films, along with the UN’s Sustainability Development Goals are key to raising global awareness on an issue which often lacks clarity in a convoluted industry.”

In addition, Charney is to moderate a panel discussion at the UN on Friday (28 September). The discussion will bring together recognised individuals, content creators, media partners and member states with the aim of highlighting global initiatives being undertaken. The participants will include pioneering model and advocate for the Rights of People with Disabilities Jillian Mercado, and refugee turned supermodel, DJ and actress Mari Malek.

Magri, explains: “Through Catwalk to Creation we are aiming to highlight the importance of sustainability. Our mission is to prove why we need to design for a lifetime, not a season. Catwalk to Creation provides consumers with transparency, it is the much-needed, behind the scenes look at the industry.

“Given 83% of all of our waters contain plastic microfibres and one-third of this is said to come from the fashion industry, the only way we are going to solve issues such as this is by raising awareness, encouraging people to be more curious and ask more questions.”
