Same-stores sales at Gap Inc, the US' largest speciality clothing retailer, fell 6% in February on lower demand for all its brands.

Net sales for the San Francisco based company in the four weeks to 1 March were flat at $907m.

By division, comparable store sales were down 3% at Gap North America, dropped 5% at
Banana Republic North America and tumbled 8% at Old Navy North America. International sales fell 7%.

"While overall results were mixed across our brands, total company merchandise margins were above last year," said Sabrina Simmons, executive vice president and chief financial officer at Gap Inc.

She added: "We will continue to manage inventory tightly as we bring summer product into our stores."
