The Filene's Basement and Running of the Brides names are to be sold at auction as part of the liquidation of bankrupt discount clothing retailers Syms Corp and Filene's Basement LLC.

Advisory firm Hilco Streambank said it expects a "robust" auction. "We have already received expressions of interest in the IP from apparel retailers and investment firms specialising in brand revitalisation and management," it added.

Also up for auction are the Syms trade name, various trademarks, Internet URLs, websites and other assets.

Hilco Streambank has already begun marketing the assets and is seeking a stalking horse bidder to acquire them through a court-supervised auction procedure. Bids will be considered for the complete portfolio or individual brands.

"Even though most Filene's Basement and Syms stores are located east of the Mississippi, we regard both brands as truly national in scope," said Jack Hazan, executive vice president with Hilco Streambank.

"The Syms brand has become synonymous with first quality men's suits as well as woman's and children's apparel."

Going-out-of-business sales on over $100m worth of inventory began at 19 Syms, 14 Filene's Basement and 6 combined store locations on 16 November.

Syms acquired assets of Filene's Basement, which had filed for bankruptcy, in a bankruptcy auction in 2009. The companies filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection again on 2 November blaming increased competition, fewer overruns by brands and the economic downturn.
