Leading sports shoe chain Footstar Inc on Wednesday posted a 6.5 per cent slide in November same-store sales which it said reflected the timing of this year's Thanksgiving holiday.

The New York-based company said November same-store sales at Meldisco fell 1.6 per cent and same-store sales for the athletic segment decreased 14.3 per cent. Total sales slumped 17.4 per cent to $154.4m from $186.9m.

Footstar said due to the calendar shift, sales results for the Thanksgiving week will be reported in fiscal month of December this year, compared with November last year.

.

Chairman and CEO Mickey Robinson said: "Footstar's results for the month of November came in modestly ahead of our expectations after taking the calendar shift into account.

"Meldisco's sales were driven by solid sales in Kmart footwear departments largely as a result of more seasonal weather this year versus 2001. In the athletic segment, both Footaction and Just For Feet performed slightly better than expectations."
