Shoe retailer Footstar Inc today said comparable store sales for the four-week period ended 27 July 2002 decreased 7.0 per cent on what the company described as "disappointing sales at Footaction".

Comparable store sales at Meldisco decreased 0.2 per cent and across the athletic segment fell 15.2 per cent.

July total sales were $164.1 million, a decrease of 13.2 per cent from the $189.1 million posted in the same period last year. Total sales for the Meldisco division declined 10.2 per cent to $96.1 million from $107.1 million, and total sales in the Company's athletic segment decreased 17.1 per cent to $68.0 million from $82.0 million.

Mickey Robinson, chairman and chief executive officer, said: "While July sales results were disappointing, with the important back-to-school season still ahead of us, it is too soon to estimate the effect of the current sales trends on third quarter earnings."

For the year-to-date period, Footstar's comparable store sales decreased 0.7 per cent. Comparable store sales at Meldisco increased 0.5 per cent, and comparable store sales for the athletic segment decreased 2.3 per cent. Footstar's total sales for the 30-week period decreased 3.3 per cent to $1,311 million from sales of $1,355.2 million in the same period in 2001. Total sales for Meldisco decreased 1.8 per cent to $779.3 million, and total sales for the athletic segment decreased 5.3 per cent to $531.7 million.
