Cardinale, the Chilean footwear manufacturer, achieved a seven per cent increase in sales during 2000, Estrategia reported. Manuel Gil, general manager for the company, said this equated to extra business of about $8m.

Cardinale has been trading for 37 years and has captured about 17-18 per cent of the local market. Eight stores operate in the Santiago Metropolitan Region and close to 10,000 pairs of shoes are exported, mainly to Bolivia.

During 2001, the company intends to invest $1m in remodelling the capital city's stores and increasing production.
