Apparel maker Fruit of the Loom is to close down its Irish operations a year earlier than planned.

The company, which said last year it was shifting manufacturing to Morocco, now plans to start laying off staff from its plants in Buncrana and Campsie in February.

Fruit of the Loom aims to close both plants by July and move manufacturing to Morocco over the next four to five years.

The company's Irish operations, which now employ about 500 people, once boasted a workforce of 3,000.
