Specialty retailer of casual apparel for teenagers, Gadzooks Inc, on Tuesday revealed it swung to a second quarter profit amid a 5.6 per cent rise in net sales to $76.7 million from $72.6m in the year-ago period.

The Texas-based operator of 440 stores reported net income of $115,000 compared to a net loss of $1.3m in 2001 and said same-store sales slipped 3.3 per cent.

First half net income climbed to $1.9m from $1.1m last year while sales for the first six months grew 8.1 per cent to $155m, although same-store sales fell 2.8 per cent.
