Specialty retailer Gap Inc has reported a 6% drop in August same-store sales, with declines across all divisions, and says it is working to improve its women's wear.

"We're determined to make the necessary adjustments to women's product and marketing to improve our overall performance and drive top-line growth going forward," said chairman and CEO Glenn Murphy.

Net sales fell 3% in the four weeks to 27 August, dropping to $1.10bn from $1.13bn a year ago.

By division, comparable sales fell 8% at Gap North America, were down 4% at both Banana Republic North America and Old Navy North America, and dropped 9% in its international unit.

For the year-to-date, net sales are nearly flat with last year at $7.78bn, while same-store sales are down by 3%.
