US speciality retailer Gap Inc has confirmed to just-style it is exiting the Weddington Way bridal business it acquired in 2016 and operated from its Banana Republic stores.

In a statement, Gap said the brand was a "small acquisition" it made to explore new types of community based e-commerce.

It added: "While the business is performing well, we determined that Weddington Way would take time to scale in an impactful way for Gap Inc."

In a bid to ensure customers are not impacted by the decision, Weddington Way will close the 13 US test stores in a phased approach over the next three months, and to ensure minimal impact to customers, will continue taking online orders until at least 11 June.

Gap said it will work to redeploy any impacted employees to positions within its other brands, where possible.

In a post on its website, Weddington Way said it is "reaching out to share that Gap Inc is exiting the business" and confirmed it will be closing its shops within the Banana Republic stores around the country over the next few months.
