Same-store sales at Gap Inc fell 3% in May following a mixed response to summer merchandise across all its brands.

However, the San Francisco based company pointed out that this is an improvement on the 6% decrease posted in May 2006.

Gap also reported a 2% rise in net sales of $1.19bn for the four-week period ended 2 June, compared with sales of $1.16bn in the same period last year.

By division, comparable store sales at Gap North America were down 7%, Banana Republic North America was up 3%, and Old Navy North America fell 3%. International same-store sales were flat.

"In May, our overall summer merchandise sales remained mixed across the brands, and total company merchandise margins were above last year," said Sabrina Simmons, senior vice president, corporate finance.
As of 2 June 2007, Gap Inc operated 3,145 store locations compared with 3,070 store locations last year.
