French garment exports in the first half of the year showed an overall rise of 6% on the same period last year, totalling close to EUR 3.3bn (US$4.24bn), the latest trade figures show.

Exports to EU countries rose 5% and increased by 8% to the rest of the world.  French-made garments were particularly in demand in Russia (+43%) and the United Arab Emirates (+45%).

Meanwhile, the value of French garment imports was unchanged at almost EUR6.6bn. The figures reveal that imports from some of France's major sources of  supply - China, Italy, Tunisia and Morocco and India - fell by 2%, 7%, 6% and 3%respectively.

However, imports from India rose 15% and from Bangladesh by 19%. There was also strong growth in deliveries from Hong Kong and Vietnam.
