Footwear retailer Genesco Inc has blamed unseasonably warm weather for a decline in third quarter net income.

The Tennessee-based company recorded earnings of $9.4 million for the quarter, down from $10.1m in the same period last year.

The company, which operates Johnston & Murphy and Journeys shoe stores, also reported quarterly sales of $212.5m, compared to $213.2m for the same period of 2002.

According to Genesco, warmer than usual weather hurt sales of its fall shoe range during the quarter.
