Apparel chain Goody's Family Clothing Inc on Thursday swung into a first quarter profit of $5.6 million after posting a $1.7m loss in the year-ago period.

The Tennessee-based operator of 330 stores said the change in its fortunes was mainly due to a combination of warmer weather and improved margins.

It added in a news release that total sales jumped 7.7 per cent to $283.5m from $263.3m in 2001, while same-store sales climbed 2.6 per cent.
