Retailer Goody's Family Clothing Inc on Thursday said it had swung to a third quarter net loss, blaming poor weather conditions.

The company posted a net loss of $804,000, or $0.02 per basic share, for the 13 weeks ended 30 October 2004, compared with net earnings of $1.71 million or $0.05 per diluted share, for the same period in 2003.

Third-quarter sales increased 1.4 per cent to $284.8m compared to $280.8m for the same period last year. Same-store sales for the third quarter of fiscal 2004 fell 2.7 per cent from the same period last year.

Robert Goodfriend, chairman and chief executive officer said: "Comparable store sales were well below plan and the prior-year third quarter due in part to a combination of unseasonably warm weather during portions of the quarter, and the impact of three major hurricanes on approximately 240 of our stores in September".

Goody's Inc sells brands including Dockers, Levi's, Nike, Reebok, Sag Harbor, and Skechers, as well as its own labels Goodclothes, Mountain Lake, Ivy Crew, and Baby Crew.
